Resumen
Este artículo pretende acercarse a la etapa
biológica y psicológica de la vejez desde la
teoría evolucionista. El motivo es entender
los orígenes del funcionamiento humano.
Creemos que los paradigmas de la psicología
y la psiquiatría han abordado fundamental-
mente el “cómo” se producen los trastornos
mentales en lugar de abordar el “porqué” se
producen.
Para el evolucionismo, nuestro cerebro es
un órgano más del cuerpo sujeto a las leyes
de la Selección Natural y por tanto a meca-
nismos adaptativos y evolutivos del mismo.
Pretendemos defender que la etapa de la
vejez es una etapa extra que se caracteriza
por el envejecimiento del cerebro y la apari-
ción de las llamadas demencias, que no son
otra cosa que trastornos ligados a la deses-
tructuración y envejecimiento del cerebro.

Abstract
This article aims to approach the biologi-
cal and psychological stage of aging from
evolutionism theory. The reason is to try to
understand the origins of human being. We
believe that the paradigms of psychology
and psychiatry have fundamentally focused
on how mental disorders occur and which
are their symptoms rather than why they
appear.
From evolutionism point of view, our brain
is one of many body organs subject to the
laws of Natural Selection and therefore it is
adaptive and has evolutionary mechanisms.
We need to realize that the old age sta-
ge is an extra stages characterized by the
aging of the brain and the appearance of
the so-called dementias, which are nothing
other than disorders linked to the destruc-
turing and aging of the brain.
