LANGUAGE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN INDIVIDUALS WITH MILD COGNITIVE IMPAIRMENT AND WITH SCHIZOPHRENIA Abstract Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and schizophrenia, while distinct in nature, can share characteristics such as cognitive impairment and language difficulties. This study aims to describe and compare language and attention characteristics in individuals with MCI and schizophrenia. An analytical non-experimental case-control design was employed, evaluating 42 participants divided into MCI and schizophrenia with MCI groups. Neuropsychological and language tests, including the MEC-30, Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test, Brief Neuropsychological Battery for Oral Language Evaluation in Older Adults NEUROBEL, and Faces Test-R, were administered. The groups of individuals with MCI and schizophrenia do not significantly differ in Peabody IQ, auditory lexical decision, sentence comprehension, picture naming, sentence completion, and Faces Test acuity minus errors. However, significant differences were found in Peabody percentile, phoneme discrimination, spoken word-picture matching, repetition, action naming, comprehension, expression, total Neurobel score, and Impulsivity Index (ICI) of the Faces Test. Patients with MCI and schizophrenia exhibit difficulties in semantic comprehension and attention. Surprisingly, patients with schizophrenia and MCI perform better in Neurobel tests than those with MCI alone. These findings suggest that, despite some differences, speech therapists can conduct group interventions for certain areas but should consider variations in the number of affected cognitive domains in each patient.
