THE ROLE OF INTERMEDIATE RESOURCES IN PSYCHOGERIATRIC HOSPITALISATION Summary The presentation and evolution of mental illness in psychogeriatrics typically differ from those in other stages of life. The clinical characteristics, psychological changes, and socio-familial impact require more specialised care for these patients, which should be provided in dedicated units by professionals from various disciplines. Based on the person-centred comprehensive care model as a common approach for all staff towards the patient, we understand that various interacting factors will influence the patient's behaviour. According to Tom Kitwood's dementia model, and adding a few more factors, these would include: organic damage, where the integrated medical team comprising a psychiatrist and geriatrician would be involved; physical health status, addressed by nursing staff; personality aspects, behaviour, and cognitive state assessment handled by psychology; life and occupational history evaluated by occupational therapy; family involvement requiring social work attention; maintenance of functionality addressed by physiotherapy in conjunction with occupational therapy; and the last factor, termed "social psychology" by Kitwood, attended to by the team of aides. Likewise, a supportive environment will be effective in preventing and redirecting disruptive behaviours. Therefore, the design of these units is also crucial in this model, as it seeks to create safe environments that are accessible both physically and cognitively, while still prioritising the importance of maintaining the autonomy of the individuals being cared for.
