Abstract Emotional dysregulation has been identified as a crucial risk factor in the development of substance use disorders (SUDs). This literature review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between emotional dysregulation and substance addictions in adult populations from the perspective of contextual therapies by examining various studies addressing how difficulty regulating emotions can contribute to the development and maintenance of addictions, as well as the role of contextual therapies in their treatment. To carry out this review, a search of scientific research from national and international sources published in recent years was conducted using the electronic databases Google Scholar and Research Gate. A total of 10 articles met the selected inclusion and exclusion criteria. The results show significant improvements in emotional regulation and reduction in substance use. Additionally, some studies also demonstrate improvements in associated psychopathological symptoms, such as anxiety and depression. Therefore, the current growing scientific evidence presents encouraging results regarding the effectiveness of these therapies in improving emotional regulation and reducing substance use. These findings suggest that contextual therapies are a promising option in treating this population. The need for future research with control groups, more representative samples, and comparisons between different treatment modalities is emphasized to enhance understanding and generalization of the results. In conclusion, this review underscores the importance of addressing emotional dysregulation in the therapy of SUDs and suggests that contextual therapies are valuable tools in this process.
