Conclusiones: El número de caídas es elevado. Un núme- ro pequeño de pacientes son repetidores de caídas. Los factores de riesgo explorados en otros trabajos también son elevados. Parti- cular interés tiene la movilidad. Existe co- rrelación estadísticamente significativa del número de caídas para características fun- cionales y enfermedades óseas. STUDY OF FALLS IN A RESIDEN- TIAL AREA FOR OLDER PERSONS IN A SOCIAL AND HEALTH CEN- TER. PART. 1: CHARACTERISTICS OF ELDERLY PEOPLE Abstract Goals: Falls are one of the main causes of morbi- dity and mortality in older adults. The objective of the study is to analyze the prevalence of falls in older people admit- ted to the elderly persons Area of the Social and Health Centre Hermanas Hospitalarias of Palencia during 2018, as well as to know the characteristics of falls and the people who suffer them. Methodology: All the data from the medical records of the elderly people residing in the Area were co- llected. Descriptive longitudinal study. Measu- ring instruments are: Modified WHO Fall Ques- tionnaire, Lobo Mini-Cognitive Exam, Barthel Index. Sociodemographic, anthropometric and clinical-functional variables are collected. Data analysis: It is done with the help of the SPSS ver- sion 15.0 program (SPSS Inc.). The quantita- tive variables will be described as mean and standard deviation (SD) and the qualitative variables as percentages. 95% confidence in- tervals will be determined (IC95). The test will be used in the analy- sis of comparison of means, chi square, analysis of variance and linear correlation, as necessary and after checking compliance with its conditions. Results: The mean age was 79.61 years. 80 men and 179 women. Of the 259 residents in the year, 106 suffered some fall (40.93%). The total number of falls was 313. 40 people (15.44%) have fallen once and 66 people (25.48%) have done more than one. 69.9% of patients present cognitive impairment, 58.3% a degree of severe dependency. Me- dical comorbidity and drug consumption are also high, but there is only statistical signi- ficance with bone disease and functionality. Conclusions: The number of falls is high. A small num- ber of patients are fall repeaters. The risk factors explored in other works are also high. Mobility is of particular interest. The- re is a statistically significant correlation of the number of falls for functional characte- ristics and bone diseases. People with significant functional impair- ment, which requires being in bed, and tho- se with severe bone disease, fall less. Key Words: Elderly people, Social and Health Centre, Falls. E.
